James Gates Husted
Decorated World War II Veteran
James Gates Husted, 87, of Toledo, OH and formerly of Bridgeton, died Sunday March 28, 2004 at the Swan Creek Retirement Village in Toledo, OH after a period of declining health.
The husband of the late Eunice Husted (nee Mourning) who died in 1976, he was born in Bridgeton and was the son of the late Harry Camm Husted and the late Arta L. Husted (nee Wolf). He was a long time resident of Lincoln Street in Bridgeton before moving to Toledo, OH in 1966.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Husted served as a Captain and Intelligence Liaison Officer for the 955th Field Artillery in the European Theater as well as the Middle Eastern Theater. He was one of the first troops to come ashore on "D-Day" and he fought during the Invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Husted was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery, the American Defense Service Medal as well as the European Theater Service Ribbon with five stars.
He was employed for fifty years by the Owens-Illinois Glass Company. First he worked in Bridgeton and later in Toledo as the division manager of the corrugated package operations. He retired in 1982.
Mr. Husted was an avid golfer and a thirty year member of the Heather Downs Golf Club in Toledo, OH. When he turned 82 he "shot his age" by earning a score of 82 on his home course.
He is survived by one son, J. Thomas Husted and his wife Fay of Lutherville, MD, daughter, Patricia J. Morine and her husband Perry of Perrysburg, OH, two grandsons, Jonathan R. Husted and his wife Jennifer of Pittsburgh, PA and Nicholas P. Husted of Towson, MD.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon March 31st at 1 o'clock at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton with Rev. Richard E. Sindall of the First Presbyterian Church of Bridgeton officiating.
The interment will be made at Overlook Cemetery in Bridgeton.
Friends will be received at the funeral home Wednesday afternoon from 12 Noon until 1.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Husted's name to the Bridgeton New Jersey Free Public Library, 150 E. Commerce Street, Bridgeton, NJ 08302.
