Mable Catherine Gifford

Talented Seamstress

Mable Catherine Gifford, 99, of Bridgeton passed away surrounded by her loving family on Sunday afternoon July 25, 2010 at the South Jersey Regional Medical Center in Vineland.

Mable was born the eldest of six sisters to the late William Laing and the late Vernie Laing (nee Mawson) in Theodore, Saskatchewan, Canada. The family immigrated to Philadelphia, Vineland, Florida and back to Vineland before settling in Bridgeton where she met her late husband William S. Gifford. They were married for almost sixty years.

Prior to her retirement she worked in a millinery factory in Philadelphia, Seibel & Stern and Little Star Frocks in Bridgeton. Throughout her life she was known to many locally as an expert seamstress who could alter ready to wear clothing, wedding gowns and household draperies to her customer's satisfaction. Until just recently, Mable enjoyed maintaining her own home, drove to and attended the Edgar Joyce Senior Center functions along with meeting friends for breakfast several times weekly.

Until her passing, she kept busy crafting doilies for gifts and knitting caps for preemies, newborn infants and patients undergoing chemotherapy to local hospitals.
In addition to her husband William, she was preceded in death by her son Donald, grandchildren Kevin and Bethann Gifford, son-in-law, Walter Patschorke and five sisters, Janet Klein, Elizabeth Lochhead, Edith Moyer, Verna Price and Carole Deane.

Left to cherish her memory are daughters, Hilda V. Patschorke, Phyllis M. Linton (Robert), daughter-in-law, Eva Gifford, grandchildren, Donna Bissinger (Michael), Cheryl Paris (Ronald), Debbie Dolbow (Richard), Eric Patschorke (Ruthann), Kathryn Loper (Donald), Linda Matteo (Nicholas), Terri Gifford and Annette Gifford, eight great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Friday morning July 30th at 11 o'clock at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton with Rev. Carll Nalbandian of the Victory Assembly of God officiating.

The interment will take place at Fernwood Memorial Park in Hopewell Township.
Friends will be received at the funeral home Friday morning one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Myasthenia Gravis foundation, 490 East North Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15212 or to the Rosenhayn Rescue Squad, or to the charity of ones own choice.
