Leonard J. "Leon" Wuzzardo

Longtime Bridgeton Resident
 

Leonard J. "Leon" Wuzzardo, 94, of Hopewell Township and a longtime resident of Bridgeton died unexpectedly Thursday morning July 1, 2010 at The Cumberland Manor in Hopewell Township.

The husband of the late Anna Rotondo Wuzzardo, who died in January of 2009, he was born in Bridgeton and was a lifelong Bridgeton resident. He was the son of the late John and Genevive Venduri Wuzzardo. He had been a resident of New Street for over 50 years before entering the Cumberland Manor in 2004.

Mr. Wuzzardo served in the US Army during World War II; he saw active duty in Africa and Tunisia. He was wounded and received the coveted Purple Heart before his discharge in 1944. He was also the recipient of the NJ Distinguished Service Medal and the Cumberland County Veteran's Medal.

He was employed for several years as a mechanic at Venice Maid Foods in Vineland. Previous to his employment there he worked for several years at Hunt Foods and the PJ Ritter Company in Bridgeton. He often proudly worked three jobs to support his family which meant everything to him.

He enjoyed singing and dancing in his younger days and bowled in local bowling leagues and liked to play cards.

Mr. Wuzzardo was a longtime member of the St. Teresa of Avila RC Church.

He is survived by three sons, Leonard "Lenny" Wuzzardo Jr. and his wife Karen, John J. Wuzzardo and his wife Mary Ann and Frank D. Wuzzardo all of Bridgeton, his former daughter-in-law, Debbie Wuzzardo, seven grandchildren, John Jr., Frank P., Ashley, Nicole, Danielle, Meredith and Philip and one great grandson, Samuel and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Mary Martelette and Rose Randazzo and brothers, Frank, Philip, Benjamin and James Wuzzardo.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral which will originate at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton on Wednesday morning July 7th at 9:30 and will be followed by a 10 o'clock Funeral Liturgy at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 312 N. Pearl St., Bridgeton.

The burial will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery in Bridgeton.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 and also Wednesday morning from 8:30 until 9:30.

Memorial contributions may be made by those who desire to the St. Teresa of Avila RC Church, 46 Central Avenue, Bridgeton, NJ 08302.
